Betyg: [6/10] Bumlingar.

Review in english:

Better than its rumour but most of all a visually entertaining trifle. Bilbo has never been a favourite of mine. Too childish and jovial. But it’s always pleasant to visit Middle Earth together with Peter Jackson. He has created a stunning environment where both fairytale and historical realism meet and get equal attention. On the downside his movies are dramatically predictable and sometimes even boring, I’m sad to say. The hobbit movies have, not like The lord of the rings movies, expanded one book into three movies. What’s left is good entertainment for the moment but it leaves you feeling ripped off. Sure it’s good looking but it reeks bad of investment calculations to turn one childrens book into three movies. If one removes what the script writers have added to the book story one could easily have made a good job with two movies. With a higher pace and no fill-out material.

That I still give this movie a fair rating is due to the fact that it draws me in, after all. It’s got stunning scenes and really has no competition when it comes to on-screen epic fantasy. Martin Freeman is the perfect choice as Bilbo and the rest of the cast is well chosen as well. Legolas gets a bit stiff in the hands of Orlando Bloom, without his brother in arms Gimli as a comic relief. Richard Taylor and the effects people at Weta make an excellent job with the special effects, but were those giant ”worms” really necessary? And why are suddenly the cave trolls double the size they used to be in Lord of the rings? Still, it’s mostly the script that bothers me, although the bastards almost fools me into crying once (Tauriel and Fili). However, the most irritating part is probably when Legolas as always is made showing off, defying gravity. It gets more silly than awesome I’m afraid.

Now I look forward to the extended DVD at the end of the year, when I can dig into the massive amount of extra material. Because that will be the end of the Middle Earth movies, won’t it? Or do I dare to wish for Beren and Luthien? Or Turin Turambar? That would definately be worth looking forward to.

Rating: [6/10].
